Personalized Learning, is defined within Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as a fundamental shift from a traditional teaching model, to a classroom that empowers and nurtures the social, emotional, academic, and developmental needs of each self-directed 21st century learner. A definition that was developed based on educational research and input from CMS teachers. Personalized Learning requires a shift in both the teacher and student. The role of teacher is changed from just a presenter of knowledge to facilitator and coach, while students are encouraged to be self-directed learners. Schools in the personalized learning cohort are guided by four cornerstones and aim to develop the whole child, while empowering students to take ownership of their learning by providing them with multiple pathways to demonstrate mastery learning in order to be successful and productive 21st century citizens in an ever-changing world. The 2014-15 school year is the first year of implementation which includes fifteen schools across elementary, middle and high school. Each school has personalized their approach to meet their schools needs. In 2015-2016, we added 18 schools and in 2016-17 we added 16 more!
